Chainsaw man and CGI

 

 So. Chainsaw man started last Tuesday. 

And reddit is at it again.

It's just like with Attack on titan all over again.

The rest of the beautiful episode is completely forgotten just because because chainsaw man himself is made with CGI (which by CGI standards looks pretty damn good and the movement is nice and smooth)

 

CGI as a term in anime communities means using a 3D model for animation, usually as a character. It is commonly used for cars and such props as well, and that isn't nearly as noticeable to the viewer, so therefor not as complained about. It's main purpose is to speed up the animating process, since frame-by-frame animation is very slow.

In fact most of the scenes people complain about as being poor CGI were completely 2D as you can see here:

I was thinking of making fun of the people jumping on the CGI hate wagon or talking about the phenomenon itself in more detail. Or manga fans not understanding how certain things need to be changed for animation. Or worse. Redditors. But petty people can be petty, I'm going to make a Chainsaw man appreciation post instead!

 

So! To appreciate the beauty of the animation I'm going to highlight my favourite shots of the first episode of Chainsaw man! The animation got me like ":o" at multiple parts. Waiting for this anime, as a manga fan, was 500% worth it!

The entire anime is very gory, it's about chainsaws after all.

 

When I started making this it was supposed to be fast and easy but it ended like this instead:

I am so happy to be a fan of this franchice. It's truly a good day to be alive. I have not felt such joy about an anime adaptation in quite a while.

 

 So! let's start with the opening!

The entire opening is beautiful. Gorgeous. Breathtaking. Just *chef's kiss* god-tier animation

 

 

 

The mascot, Pochita, is so cute! ;-; <3

 

The facial expressions are full of emotion! 

 

The devils look so creepy! 

 

The environments are gorgeous!

 

The camera angles and artistic decisions are amazing! It's very cinematic.

 

AND CHAINSAW MAN ;-;

 

I cannot believe this is a SERIES and not a movie with this level of beautiful and detailed animation! Bless the animators! Thank you studio Mappa!

 

Dear Reddit, I just want to point out that the main character of Chainsaw man, Denji, realizes that he should've been happy with what he already had and not have asked for more. This is coming from a character who has only known extreme poverty his entire life and only asked for the bare minimum. It's the message of the first episode. Do better!

Ps. If you want to dislike Mappa do it for better reasons such as

-overworking their workers

-not paying them enough

-having inconsistent animation in style (especially if you compare them to other studios)

-rushing their production

-making weird (like seriously WEIRD) changes for their blu-ray versions

-putting rap to play instead of a soundtrack in the beast titan vs Levi rematch is a sin all on its own

But their CGI? It's absolutely amazing compared to other studios.
